A Practical Guide for Flooring Pros and DIYers

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is fast becoming one of the most popular floor coverings in both commercial and domestic spaces. But when you're working with chipboard as your subfloor, proper installation makes all the difference. In this guide, we walk you through a quick, reliable, and cost-effective method to install LVT over chipboard, using products trusted by the trade—like UZIN RR 620 and UZIN KE 2000 S. Whether you're a professional floor layer or a hands-on DIYer, this guide will help you achieve a durable, smooth finish every time.

Why Chipboard Needs Special Attention

Not all chipboard is created equal. For LVT installation, only P4 to P7 flooring-grade chipboard should be used. These boards are designed to handle the loads and provide the structural stability required for resilient flooring. Before laying anything down:

  • Make sure the chipboard is firmly screw-fixed
  • It must be dry, clean, free of cracks and contaminants
  • Vacuum thoroughly to remove any dust or debris
  • Depending on the condition, a primer like UZIN PE 260 may be needed to seal the surface and boost adhesion.

Step-by-Step LVT Installation over Chipboard

1. Prepare the Subfloor

Check that your chipboard is P4–P7 rated, secure, and stable. Tighten any loose boards and fix any creaks. If needed, apply a neat coat of UZIN PE 260 Primer.

2. Lay the UZIN RR 620 Underlay

  • Roll out the UZIN RR 620 with the adhesive side facing down
  • Cut to size and maintain a few mm gap around walls or other vertical structures
  • Peel off the film and stick the underlay directly onto the chipboard
  • Roll the surface firmly using a 68kg floor roller to eliminate air bubbles and ensure proper bond

The RR 620 underlay provides:

  • Underfoot comfort
  • Sound insulation
  • A smooth base for the LVT

3. Apply Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive

Use UZIN KE 2000 S or an equivalent pressure-sensitive LVT adhesive.

  • Apply evenly using an A2 notched trowel
  • Allow it to flash off as per product guidelines
  • Lay your LVT planks or tiles carefully, following your layout pattern

4. Finish with a Floor Roller

After installation, press the LVT firmly into place with a heavy-duty pressure roller to activate the adhesive fully and ensure a bubble-free, tight bond.
